Ozark Trail 1-Person Single Wall Backpacking Tent with 2 Vents

What defines a single-wall versus a double-wall tent? Why the two construction designs? And which are the best uses for each? A single-wall tent is exactly what its name implies: A tent constructed of a single wall of fabric. Traditionally, single-walled tents used some sort of robust waterproof, breathable fabric and were almost exclusively used as mountaineering tents. In an effort to produce ever-lighter tents for all types of users, some tent manufactures now use coated, nonbreathable fabrics on single-wall backpacking tents. Again, the answer is almost too obvious. A double wall tent is constructed of two walls—typically the tent body and a rainfly.

At a festival, if not at all times, you want to cut the number of people a tent says it can sleep in half. These tents have only a single layer of fabric between where you sleep and the outside world. Decent tents have two layers with a gap between the two, which prevents water from getting inside. All your stuff will get soaked.

One way of looking at this is that with a 2 layer tent you’re also going to get condensation. Now the ones I’ve had usually have the inner and fly.

There are so many compromises to be made when packing for an outdoor adventure. Every kilo of weight counts since you will be dragging it with you for the whole trip. One such compromise is the tent in which you are going to stay. These cleverly designed small shelters offer a wide variety of sizes, designs, and other capabilities to not only withstand the outdoor wear and tear but also protect you from wind, rain, etc. Tents are usually chosen based on comfort which means more space and durability.

But more comfort and durability probably means more weight. But when you are hiking solo, you can get relief on weight. Solo tents are small, but they are lightweight saving a lot of precious kilos. So here are the best one-man tents in the UK that you should consider if you are planning a night trip outdoors. OutdoorGear Backpacker Pro is a budget-friendly, lightweight and compact tent. It is sturdy, easy to pitch and ideal for solo backpacking.

One Person Tents for Backpacking

Some years ago the Product Manager at Easton Mountain Products attempted to have an Asian tent manufacturer reproduce my design of tunnel tents, under licence from me. The agreement gave me total control over whether the tents were good enough to carry my name. The project failed for two reasons. First, the Asian factory was used to making simple pop-ups and tarps, and had a lot of trouble trying to copy my instructions for the far more complex tunnel tent design properly.

In this they were limited by the fact that the factory workers could not read basic English.

Of course a roaring fire, electric blanket, irish coffee and +1 help [IMG] Also size of tent makes a difference as a 4 man single skin will have.

This is perfect for backpacking – it’s my second Cobra the first one was 10 years old when the pole broke on a windy night – really good space for one person but would be tight for two. Time will tell how long this one lasts, but it has more guys than the Cobra 1, so hopefully that’ll mean less stress on the pole. Once you’re used to it, you can have it up in about 3 minutes whatever the weather which is exactly what you need wild camping in Scotland!

With so many of us unable to enjoy our usual holidays abroad this year, taking the family on a Great British camping trip can be equally as fun! Or simply camping in your back garden with the kids or grandchildren is a great way to keep them entertained. Cheaper tents will normally only have a single skin, which means less protection from the elements, but they are simple to set up, lightweight and easily transportable, making them perfect for festivals or short camping trips.

Pricier tents normally have a double skin and are usually waterproof and come with a more robust frame. Size: All tents will specify the number of people it can sleep but we advise going up a size – so using a three-man tent for two people, for example – to allow a little extra room for bags or equipment.

Get set for the festival season with the Trail 2-Man Single Skin Pop-Up Tent. This tent will comfortably sleep 1 person, but it is big enough for 2 and will.

Finding the best backpacking tent isn’t easy in such a crowded market, but fear not, the backpacking tent niche has some big red flags to help weed out the pretenders with ease. The best tent for general camping is not the same as the best backpacking tent. Here, the key things to keep front of mind are weight, followed by packsize and durability.

That’s not to say you’ll need to compromise on any of those things to get an awesome tent, but heavier tents will seem to weigh more and more with each extra mile you carry them, so swerve the extra weight where possible. Packsize is also important for longer trips, especially in more rugged country, where keeping a streamlined and well-packed hiking backpack is an essential survival skill in itself. For example the huge disc of a packed popup tent is fairly impractical for hiking anyway, but downright dangerous on a airy ridge or exposed crest, while a neatly packed tent inside a rucksack is much less susceptible to damage from rock abrasion, as well as being less of a windsock.

Finally, internal space and durability are both considerations, most importantly the number of sleepers you’ll be squeezing in — remember that splitting heavier tents between 3 or 4 can reduce the load enormously. While you’ll generally want to maximise weight savings over internal space, room inside can be a vital personal sanity factor on longer trips, so keeping a balance between comfort and weight here is key

A popular shelter with front-entry, where two guy lines create a small but annoying obstruction to smooth access. For a shorter person like me 5ft 8in , the length of the bag provides sufficient space to store items at the head of the bag. On warmer nights, the midge net at the head provides excellent ventilation. Unfortunately, one of the pegging-out points at the foot of the bag came off, but a stone placed inside the bag proved a successful alternative!

It coped well with the windy conditions we encountered, although the fabric does rustle in the wind. Weight compared to conventional tents, midge door, more headroom than a bivi, more weather protection than a tarp. A super-light, single-skin shelter, at just g, with the huge benefit of a full sewn-in groundsheet and inner midge-proof door. Simple to pitch and adjust, using your trekking pole as the main central support and a supplied short pole at the tail.

Big enough to both stretch out and sit up in, with a porch large enough to shelter gear and cook in. But despite the top vent and mesh inner door, condensation became a problem, and being tall my sleeping bag quickly got wet at the foot end where the tent is low and narrow. Made from denier ripstop silicone-coated nylon, the Silwing provides 5m2 of protection, with seven sides and eight pegging, guy line or pole attachment points. Pitching takes practice, and if rain is suspected then a bivi bag is needed too.

You want minimal weight and cash outlay, and enjoy sleeping with less barriers between you and the outdoors.

The majority of hikers use double skin, 3-season tents as their main form of shelter. Specifically tent selection for hikers. As a hiker you are physically going to be carrying your shelter on your back rather than transporting it in a vehicle. You will find that once you have been hiking for a while that you will more than likely own more than one shelter as you gain experience and work out what you need for specific situations.

In choosing a tent for hiking the following factors are the ones most used by hikers in making their choice. This should be obvious but its not always as simple as it sounds. This is the starting point and where you decide on how many people are going to be sleeping in your tent? Tent manufacturers will label their tents as one, two, three persons etc. Are you cm or cm tall? Are you a slim build or on the solid side? Really there can be no such thing as an average person.

These days with modern materials there is often not a huge difference between a one and two person version of the same tent at least as far as weight goes. When choosing a tent look at the length width and height of the tent.
